Hilary Apfelstadt

Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt is Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the Ohio State University where she conducts the Chorale, the Women’s Glee Club, supervises Mastersingers, teaches conducting and repertory classes and coordinates the graduate conducting program. A native of Canada, she earned degrees in choral music education from the University of Toronto, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she studied choral conducting with Robert Fountain. With public teaching and collegiate level teaching experience in both Canada and the U.S., she has taught for 32 years. Her collegiate ensembles have performed by invitation at American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conventions, both divisional and national, as well as at state and regional conferences of MENC. She is particularly recognized for her interests in choral repertoire for women’s choirs and leadership styles among conductors. She has presented numerous papers at conferences on both topics. For several years, she sang with the Robert Shaw Institute Singers in France and in New York, and recorded two CD’s for Telarc under Mr. Shaw’s direction.

Dr. Apfelstadt is National President of ACDA, chairing the Executive Committee and National Board from 2007–2009. She has been a member of the Choral Journal Editorial Board, the Research and Publications Committee, and was President of the North Carolina chapter of ACDA as well as of the Central Division. She is a member of three editorial boards: the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, the International Journal of Research in Choral Singing, and The Choral Scholar, published by the National Association of Collegiate Choral Conductors (NCCO). She is a prolific author, with more than 75 published articles on choral music to her credit. She is a frequent all-state and honor choir conductor and is equally comfortable conducting children’s, youth or adult choirs. She has conducted in Canada, the U.S., England, and Cuba. In 2008, she will conduct a mixed choir festival in Lucerne. In addition to her position at the Ohio State University, she is Music Director at Linworth United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio.
